The word 'imitate' means to follow or copy. In Ephesians 5 we are commanded to be imitators of God:
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2, NLT)
Children emulate their parents, it's just something they do. As children of God, we are supposed to copy what we see our Father doing, just as Jesus demonstrated perfectly.
So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. (John 5:19, NLT)
Whilst Jesus was on the earth He lived His life as a man. Even though He was God He chose to subject His will and divinity to the Father, thus providing us with the perfect example of how we are to live our lives. Jesus told us that He imitated the Father. In everything He did, He was simply copying what He saw Abba (Father) doing first. He was the perfect replica.
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, (Colossians 1:15,NLT)
To see Jesus is to see the Father (John 14:9). When any person sees Christ they get to see what the Father is like. The same should be true of us. If we follow after Christ as the scripture challenges us to, we too will seek to be imitators of God, doing only those things that we see Him doing first.
