When it comes to reminding myself why I should not love this world, the following verses are definitely my favourite.
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17, NLT)
You cannot love the world and the Father, it is either or. In the society we live in today, there is a lie that leads us to believe that we can crave all the things that this world offers us and somehow still please God. However, this passage of scripture reveals otherwise.
This world is all about what we can do that makes us feel good, what we can get that looks nice, or what we can achieve so that we might appear great in the sight of others. When the love of the Father is in us we no longer live for these things, but we now live to please Him and to glorify Him. It is not about us anymore, but about Him.
The world promises to meet our carnal cravings, but everything it offers is in the process of decay. A life of faith and obedience is one that pleases God and has a promise of eternal life. It is a life that goes against the current of society, but it is one with rewards beyond imagination.
