How do you know God lives in you?

Perhaps you’ve asked this question before, or maybe you’ve been asked this question? There are many different signs that the Bible reveals to us that act as evidence or fruit for the indwelling presence of God in your life. The following passage reveals some of these.

11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. 13 And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.14 Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.15 All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. 16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. (1 John 4:11-16, NLT)

The first sign we are made aware of in these verses is love. We don’t love each other “so that” God will live in us (we cannot earn His presence). However, we know God lives in us “because” we are able to love each other. Remember, real love is defined by God and was demonstrated perfectly through the cross - it endures and is sacrificial.

The second proof mentioned is the Spirit of God Himself - the Holy Ghost. He is the one who enables us and teaches us to love in the first place.

Thirdly, this passage of scripture reveals that our confession of Jesus is our evidence. If we truly believe Jesus is the Son of God we will confess this with our mouth (faith). Salvation is by grace (God’s part) through faith (our part). As soon as we confess (from a heart of belief) God is faithful and fulfils His side by making His dwelling in us. The very fact that you believe and confess should let you know that God lives in you. Amen.
